Andy Warhol, born Andrew Warhola on August 6, 1928 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and died in New York on February 22, 1987, was an American artist who belonged to Pop Art, an artistic movement of which he was one of the innovators. Warhol is known throughout the world for his work as a painter, music producer, author, avant-garde films, and for his links with intellectuals, Hollywood celebrities and rich aristocrats. Although Warhol’s work remains controversial, it has been the subject of numerous exhibitions, books, and films since his death. Warhol is widely recognized as one of the most famous artists of the 20th century.
