Sports collectible cards (Baseball, Basketball, American Football) have been highly valued in the United States for over 70 years. In Europe and France, the success of collectible cards has primarily been associated with Panini since 1961, a company founded in Modena, Italy, with a focus on football. In the late 1950s, Giuseppe and Benito Panini, two brothers, began cutting out pictures of football players from unsold magazines and inserting them into newspapers. The local children loved them! The two brothers then purchased cards in large quantities to distribute with newspapers. They later introduced a collectible card album featuring players from the Italian football league. This was the first album that came with glue provided with the magazine to attach the images, which were sold in separate packets. By expanding into other sports and animals, their success was immediate. Each sticker was printed in equal quantities and without duplicates in each packet. In France, the first album was released for the 1970 FIFA World Cup in Mexico, the year when the stickers became adhesive (stickers). Then came the French league in 1976, and today, over 100 football albums have been published in France.

Given their enduring success, Panini diversified its commercial strategies, adding rigid cards to the stickers. Some were numbered or signed by players, while others were produced in limited quantities or included sports memorabilia (pieces of jerseys, nets, etc.). All of this created rarity and catered to a growing market of collectors looking for unique or very rare cards. Prices in the secondary market soared. In competition with Panini, other success stories like Topps and Upper Deck, to name a few, fought for the rights to various football and sports competitions to distribute cards by the millions year after year.
