Three other American grading companies form the “Big Four,” including SCG (Sportscard Guaranty Corporation) in July 1998, Beckett Grading Service founded in 1999 by James Beckett, who had founded four sports card magazines fifteen years earlier, and GAI (Global Authentication Inc) in the early 2000s. In Europe, the first grading companies arrived in the mid-2010s, such as PCA (Professional Cards Authenticator), which specializes in Pokémon cards, and MTG Grade, originally specialized in grading Magic: The Gathering cards.
What has been observed in the United States has recently reached Europe—a shift towards a different way of collecting. While in the past, simply amassing cards was enough to satisfy collectors, there is now a growing trend toward collecting as a business. It is not uncommon to see sellers who buy large quantities of rare cards to have them graded and then reinvest in other hobbies. Cards are considered as investments, much like any other item in the art market or as a tangible asset. It’s a bet on the future, as grading cards allows collectors to enhance the value of their collections. The choice of grading company should be based on the card’s family, significance, subject, and language. Read more about graded collectible cards.
