Luong Xuan Nhi

Luong Xuan Nhi is an important figure in the history of 20th century Vietnamese Art. The artist was born in 1914 in Hanoi. Colonial expansion was also accompanied by an interest in the arts of the Indochinese peninsula, which led to the creation of schools of applied arts. Luong Xuan Nhi graduated in 1937 from the Hanoi School of Fine Arts, founded in 1924, where French painters taught. He studied with Nguyen Nam Son and Victor Tardieu. He is one of the first painters to use oil paint in Vietnam.

Like many artists coming out of this institution, the painter operates a strange and graceful mixture between Vietnamese and Western themes and techniques. He is often nicknamed “the master of greens” because of the use he makes of this color in his landscapes but also “the painter of beauty” because of his success on portraits of young women. During his career he demonstrates a real attachment to the classical values of painting. His impressionist landscapes, then on his return from a two-year stay in the USSR, his realistic social scenes established his notoriety. Thanks to his use of a soft chromatic scale and his delicate touch, he manages to give his compositions great depth. His style is a mixture of Vietnamese and Western themes and techniques.

Luong Xuan Nhi’s talent has left its mark on Vietnam, where he is an important figure in the country’s artistic landscape. His works are highly sought after by collectors and art lovers. They are sold at excellent prices at our auctions.
