Leonard Tsuguharu Foujita was born in 1886 in Tokyo. Coming from a well-to-do family of the Japanese military bourgeoisie, he was introduced to Western culture at a very early age by those close to him. He quickly entered the Tokyo School of Fine Arts where he turned to learning Western painting, graduating in 1910.
In 1913 Foujita moved to France, where he discovered cubism and soon lived in Montparnasse, where he rubbed shoulders with the most famous protagonists of the Ecole de Paris.
