When he was only 14, Louis Vuitton left his home village in the Jura to reach the capital. Hired as an apprentice layetier emballeur malteur, he quickly proved himself in the field. Very skilled with his hands, he made a travel kit for Empress Eugenie in 1852. Two years later in 1854, Louis Vuitton opened a boutique in Paris, which marked the beginning of the company.
Very attentive to trends and market development, Louis Vuitton innovated by inventing flat trunks, not curved trunks as they were done at the time. Practical and solid, these trunks were a real success and Louis Vuitton made a name for itself in the industry. Like many companies, Louis Vuitton expanded abroad by opening a boutique in New York and one in London. To fight against the counterfeiting phenomenon, Louis Vuitton decided to create a monogram LV to distinguish itself. Of course, this did not prevent counterfeit items from being made.
