Marie Laurencin

Marie Laurencin is a French painter born in 1883. She received a complete bourgeois education. Her natural inclination for art, be it literature, painting or music, led her to take drawing courses at the City of Paris and the Académie Humbert.
In 1907, she exhibited for the first time. She met Picasso and became closer to the artists of the Bateau-Lavoir. Very much introduced among the Fauvists and Cubists, she integrated some of their aesthetic innovations into her work, such as the simplification of forms. Yet she remained on the fringe of these groups of artists and created her own style. She paints mostly feminine, elegant and airy figures, in a reduced and liquid palette.
