Born in Nantes in 1861, Maxime Maufra will always remain attached to Brittany. He devoted himself exclusively to painting from 1890 onwards and stayed in Pont-Aven, where he met Gauguin, rubbed shoulders with Renoir, Puvis de Chavannes, Sisley and Pissarro. After having subscribed for a time to symbolist and synthetic doctrines, he moves closer to Impressionism while retaining a certain freedom of interpretation in the rendering of nature.
