Eugène Printz

Born in 1889, Eugène Printz did not receive any special schooling. Thanks to a favourable family environment, his eye was trained from a very young age. Indeed, the French cabinetmaker and decorator tries his hand in his father’s workshop where he copies antique furniture. Furniture, which he sees as a luxury item worthy of the finest materials, soon holds no more secrets for Printz. He quickly turned his attention to the creation of modern furniture, which found its place at the International Exhibition of Decorative Arts and Modern Industries in 1925.

In regular collaboration with Pierre Chareau, the decorator exhibited in many salons. Very quickly, orders flooded in, notably from the Mobilier National and the City of Paris, and some of the furniture was kept in the artist’s living museums.

Printz distinguishes himself by the elegance of his creations: the art of wood encroachment, the use of palm wood and lacquer on his furniture inspired by his collaboration with Indochinese craftsmen, and oxidized metal for the decorative elements and encroachment, denounces a perfect mastery of woodworking by the artist.

Printz’s ambition is international. Although he makes furniture for America, Mexico, England and Belgium, he remains famous for decorating the apartments of the Princess de la Tour d’Auvergne in the Château de Grosbois, as well as Jeanne Lanvin’s offices in Paris.

We regularly receive pieces from the four corners of the world to enliven our auctions, which testify to the keen interest that Printz arouses on the art market scene.
